Why did I want to become a Reiki Master?

Well, I’ve always had an affinity with horses but the thought of possibly being able to help them with their physical problems and even more so help them to release their emotional fears, stress and worries was even more appealing.

So I went to the south of England for my training and at first I have to be honest I thought what an earth is this and why have I just wasted a load of money to do something I don’t really understand. I couldn’t quite get it into my head how this energy ignites and performs from the activities that I was taught and the information I was given.

But then something strange happened I started practising on horses and people not really believing that anything would happen, but it did and I could see the effects and slowly and gradually started to realise that there was something in this so I took my training further and finally became a Reiki Master. Then my training really did begin because once you fully qualify that’s when you really start to learn and over the years I’ve learnt so much from horses from dogs and people who have allowed me to give them this wonderful energy called Reiki.

The word “Reiki” means “mysterious atmosphere, miraculous sign.” It comes from the Japanese words “rei” (universal) and “ki” (life energy). Reiki is a type of energy healing.

Energy healing targets the energy fields around the body. Energy can stagnate in the body where there has been physical injury or possibly emotional pain. In time, these energy blocks can cause illness.

Energy medicine aims to help the flow of energy and remove blocks in a similar way to acupuncture or acupressure. Improving the flow of energy around the body, can enable relaxation, reduce pain, speed healing, and reduce other symptoms of illness.

Reiki is best held in a peaceful setting, but it can be carried out anywhere. The patient will sit in a comfortable chair or lie on a table, fully clothed. I like to use music when treating.

Hands lightly on or over specific areas of the head, limbs, and torso using different hand shapes, for between 2 and 5 minutes. The hands can be placed over 20 different areas of the body.

If there is a particular injury, such as a burn, the hands may be held just above the wound.

The hands are lightly on or over the body, the transfer of energy takes place. During this time, my hands may be warm and tingling. Each hand position is held until I sense that the energy has stopped flowing.

When I feel that the heat, or energy, in my hands has abated, then I will remove my hands and may place them over a different area of the body.

When I treat horses or dogs, the energy may not immediately take place as the animal may already be stressed and moving around, however, within a very short time the animal receives the energy and the Reiki starts to do its work.

When reiki is being received by a person their will be experiencing many things, such as, heat, seeing colours, emotionally they may cry, they may feel cold, feel they are being pressed down, may also feel they are being lifted in the air…. As we are all different the response is also different for many though there are plenty similarities too!

In horses, they will what appears to be yawning (releasing either pain or anxiety), they will sleep, poo, chew, do a rocking motion…..again it varies from horse to horse.

In my experience Reiki will certainly help, if not clear any anxiety from either an animal or a person and will certainly help speed up the healing process in any physical problems.

I am privileged to treat so many horses. I also treat dogs and people too and a few years ago was asked to treat the cancer patients at St James Hospital cancer unit.
