I’m dedicated in helping others reach their full potential by providing a supportive approach to teaching delivery. How I am different to any other lecturer or coach is explained in this brief article.
The UK equine education system today is striding to demonstrate how it can adapt its delivery and assessment to meet the needs of the everchanging demands of the equine industry. It is not unusual to hear of programmes extending from apprenticeships to doctorates, with many focuses ranging from equine studies to sciences and equine-business management.
Beaudoin (2018) reports on the value of the equine education system and discusses how those who have participated in collegiate equestrian programmes, whether they be strictly academic, athletic or a combination of the two, have progressed themselves in being industry ready. Advanced education numbers are on the rise and scholarly establishments are seeing the numbers for these programmes increase yearly.
Having lectured and coached within the realms of this field for many years myself, I am well aware of the invaluable level of information that needs to be delivered by teaching staff to ensure that the new fledgling professionals can soar both practically and theoretically after they’ve graduated. Not only that, but these future employees must also meet the demands of their employers and the high industry expectations set in-front of them. From this perspective, it is critical that each learner succeeds whilst in education.
The question is, are all these learning enthusiasts excelling well in the system or are there some simply falling through the net? Although educational institutions set out regular 1:1s and careful strategies to help and support (and I am in no way criticizing these efforts), can anything more be done? The answer is yes.
Last year, I set out to help fill this gap by providing a platform for a bespoke tutoring service for those in the equine industry. The aim for this provision is to run systematically with equine colleges, universities and awarding bodies to help success and confidence within our aspiring equine professionals. With a well-designed programme, self-achievement found from tutoring can be large gain (Polson and Richardson, 2013) and many silent benefits include professional growth that can shape successful career prospects (Piper, 2001).
My tutoring provision has already proven popular with equine students, parents and Pony Clubs and has been used on a versatile basis with a variety of methods.
As we know, there are a range of existing educational platforms from Pony Club to University, that already shape the knowledge of our equine world and I am therefore using each of these in progressing individuals working towards their goals, however big or small in a bid to secure a more competent and confident equine individual.
Regardless of experience, age, or ability, I want to make sure that I continue to create a tailored programme that scaffolds around educational learning theories but also delivers to current equine industry needs and examining body requirements. More can be done to stop those falling through the net.
